about

I wrote all the music of this piece in a few minutes while I was between takes in the recording studio, and was just really fooling around. Hence the upbeat playful intro and vibe of the whole thing. The words came a little later on that summer, as I had some profound breakthroughs in my meditations and feelings of Love and Protection during a Native American traditional ceremony that I participated in, in the beautiful dessert town of Joshua Tree.
We recorded most of the instruments completely live and in just a few takes, as we did for most of this album. Vocals and minor overdubs were executed shortly after. Hats off to Johnny Marr on this one :)

lyrics

Sidewalk Strut

In the cold and dead of winter’s night
On the wings of love arrived a light
Whispered words that guide and heal so true
So, tell me who’s been looking over you my friend?

And on the hands of one midsummer’s dream
She’s the one who helped me float upstream
Whispered words that guide and heal so true
Tell me who’s been looking over you?

So I’ll take one for the road, two for my body, three for my soul
There’s just no way to know, you cant’s guarantee you’ve got a long way to go

And you know I’m finished with tomorrow
And bygone has slipped with yesterday
And for sure I’m living for this moment
Far beyond a shadow of a doubt

So I’ll take one for the road, two for my body, three for my soul
There’s just no way to know, you cant’s guarantee you’ve got a long way to go
One man walks down a road, another one follows and falls in his hole
There’s just no way to know, you can’t guarantee you’ve got a long way to go

There’s no better place to be than here
There’s no better way to see than clear
There’s no better way to hold that near
You left so much behind, but fear

So I’ll take one for the road, two for my body, three for my soul
There’s just no way to know, you cant’s guarantee you’ve got a long way to go
